Under 14 Girls win Midlands Championship

This weekend saw Staffordshire U14 Girls JAC crowned Midlands Champions. They went into the tournament unbeaten, seeing them winning all of their development matches. The day began with three pool games. The first match saw them take on Northants, producing a 3-0 victory, with goals from Mary Wolfe, Ellie Bokros and Beth Peers. The second match was a close affair, producing a talking point of whether Staffs should have had an early lead – cries of goal-line technology were evident, but Staffs stuck at it and beat Worcestershire 1-0 with the goal coming from Katy Nash. The last pool match produced a high scoring event, seeing Staffs beat Birmingham & West Midlands 5-0 with the goals by Ellie Bokros, Katy Nash, Mary Wolfe, Beth Peers and Olivia Thackray. Having won all their pool matches, Staffs went through to the semi-finals as pool winners and were drawn against Derbyshire. Again, another high scoring match was produced, seeing Staffs victorious. A brace from Beth Peers and goals for skipper Emma Hamplett and Ellie Bokros, saw Staffs 4-1 winners and on their way to the final! The final again saw Staffs drawn against Northants, who had beaten Shropshire in their semi final. With both teams on a ‘high’ and determined to make this a day to remember, it was a close contest. Staffs found the net first, when Emily Colquhorn scored from close range at the back post. Staffs had to remain strong defensively as Northants looked to draw level and Staffs got their reward and sealed their win in superb fashion when Beth Peers unleashed an unstoppable reverse stick hit into the roof of the Northants net! Making Staffs 2-0 winners and the U14 girls Midlands champions! A huge congratulations to all involved, being crowned champions was the true icing on the cake for the day and the whole of the JAC cycle this group had produced. This was a thoroughly deserved win and one that the girls can be proud of! Well done!!!

Staffs Under 14 Girls keep on winning

The U14 Girls went into their final round of development games this weekend with a trip to Shrewsbury to play the hosts Shropshire and Warwickshire. With previous performances showing so much potential, Staffordshire were determined not to let their standards slip and build on them in preparation for their tournament in May. Katy Nash was the Staffordshire captain for the day. The first tie saw them up against Shropshire, who in the previous season had won the U13s tournament. Staffordshire got off to a slow start and struggled to settle into their game, but the defence remained strong and fought off early Shropshire pressure. Staffordshire then took the lead before half-time with a goal from Beth Peers and finished the half a lot stronger. After the break, Staffordshire came out a lot more confident and powerful, which started to put the pressure onto Shropshire, both from an attacking point of view and defensively, seeing Staffordshire started to close them down a lot quicker/not allowing them to play. Staffordshire’s whole game-play started to reach the heights of previous matches, passing the ball around and exploiting any gaps left by their opponents. They soon had their rewards for this, with a goal from skipper Katy Nash. Staffordshire weren’t finished there and continued to test the Shropshire’s defence, which eventually resulted in Mary Wolfe scoring another Staffordshire goal to complete the scoring and making the end result a strong 3-0 victory. In their second tie, Staffordshire took on Warwickshire and wasted no time in showing Warwickshire what they were up against! From the Warwickshire push back, Mary Wolfe hassled and closed down their players, winning the ball and driving through to set up Ellie Bokros for a very early Staffordshire lead! This again was a close fought match in periods, but with Staffordshire remaining strong and confident both in attack and defence; they were creating chances and testing Warwickshire, whilst limiting any real threat from their opponents. Into the second half and Staffordshire set a target of at least doubling their lead, and skipper Katy Nash was on hand to deliver the target, bagging the second goal of the match and also a well deserved second of the day for herself. All in all this was a great day of results for Staffordshire. Both opposition teams were strong and at times tested Staffordshire, which was good preparation for their up and coming tournament in May. Staffordshire built on their previous performances and showed against tougher opposition, they can still deliver quality and confident Hockey. Every member of the squad worked really hard and thoroughly deserved the victories. The girls should be proud of their performances, a huge well done to you all!!

Staffs Under 14 Girls win big

Staffordshire U14 Girls went into their second round of matches this weekend, with ties versus Northants and Worcestershire. In their first tie, Staffs took on Worcestershire seeing them victorious winning 4-0! Goals came via Mary Wolfe, Ellie Bokros, Beth Peers and Emma Hamplett. In their second tie, Staffs again were in goal-scoring form and beat hosts Northants 4-1. Goals coming from Mary Wolfe, Emma Hamplett and a brace from Beth Peers – one of which was a penalty stroke that was tucked away with no chance of a save from the Northants goalkeeper. In both matches, Staffordshire showed dominance in their play, creating several goal-scoring chances aside from the ones they converted. The team worked hard in the heat and showed a strong and confident display of hockey throughout. Natalia Argeitaki-White captained the side and was part of a strong defensive unit for Staffs too. A special mention goes to the Staffs goalkeeper, Liz Mahon, who kindly stepped in to help out Northants in their tie versus Worcestershire, then played both of her own games too. All in all this was a very positive performance from Staffs and was a performance that showed the squad has potential to get even stronger! A huge well done to everyone who was involved, a great day of hockey!

Under 14 Girls beat Derbyshire 3 - 1

Staffordshire began their match phase of JAC with an away trip to Derbyshire. Unfortunately their second opposition the Black Country were unable to attend, so this left Staffordshire with one tie versus Derbyshire. The match started at quite a pace and saw Staffordshire begin to dominate in attack – using their wings well and feeding the two forwards to create several chances. Staffordshire took the lead in the first half, seeing Katy Nash working hard to win the ball back in midfield, the ball was then feed through to Ellie Bokros, who ran through to slot the ball home and give Staffs a deserved lead. As the half progressed, the Staffs defence of Lottie Pike, Maddie Sanders, Natalia Argeitaki-White and sweeper Claudia Bettson-Burdett were remaining strong and cutting out Derbyshire attacks, limiting Staffs ‘keeper Ellie Witton to only a few touches in the half. The second half saw Derbyshire score a quick equaliser, but this did not deter Staffs and they kept pushing forward. The midfield still worked well, battling hard and passing the around, creating gaps in the Derbyshire defence. Staffs second goal came via a penalty corner where skipper Emma Hamplett pushed an unstoppable shot from the top of the ‘D’ into the corner of the Derbyshire goal. The team didn’t stop there, showing yet again dominance in attack, it wasn’t long before Staffs added to their lead, when a through ball to Mary Wolfe saw her give Staffs a 3-1 lead. The match finished in a well-deserved Staffs victory and was a game with plenty of positives to be taken into their next set of matches. The team played really well and you could not fault their efforts and commitment. A huge well done to girls!!
